Today we hear from AJF-PRSSA Communications Director Jenna Fischer and Recruitment Chair Rachel Rumsby. Jenna is a transfer student from Middlesex County College and joined the chapter during her junior year. Rachel is a sophomore and joined during her freshman year. They discuss the importance of joining PRSSA as an underclassman. 1.) You are entering the workforce with multiple years of experience. The main reason new graduates get frustrated with job searching is they feel that they do not have enough experience. If you join PRSSA as a freshman you enter the workforce with at least three years of experience. Joining PRSSA will help you build meaningful connections with other students and PR practitioners. PRaction is Rowan’s student-run Public Relations firm that allows students to gain experience by working with real clients. Both organizations will put you ahead in the competitive application process. 2.) MentorshipOur chapter has many upperclassmen you can turn to for advice. Eboard members have diverse work and school experiences. As an underclassman, it is good to see what others are doing to succeed in real-time. Whether it be questions about internships, resumes, or class advice, we are here to help. It is good to look up to upperclassmen to emulate success in the future. 3.) Shows your dedication and commitment One of the first things PR job recruiters will look for on your resume is if you were involved in PRSSA. PRSSA is a national, well-known organization. By joining, it shows that you are serious about a career in PR. By showing a commitment to the organization for multiple years, it shows you can be dedicated to a company for a longer period of time. 4.) Helps you figure out what you want to do. PR has many different sub-fields. There is agency life, political PR, healthcare, social media, and more. It can be overwhelming when there are so many options. However, AJF-PRSSA has speakers who come from different sub-field and talk about their experiences. This will give you more information about the ins and outs of the sub-field that you may not have known if you didn’t hear it from that PR practitioner. 5.) You’re all set to go for the future.Once you’ve been involved for a while, you will be fully prepared for whatever job in PR you decide to apply for. Your resume will feature many different experiences from your time in PRSSA and PRaction. Your resume will also be clean and worded perfectly, thanks to our resume workshops. You also will forever have the connections and you built through your time with AJF-PRSSA. Interested in joining? Great! Send us an email and follow us on social media for more information.
